Dear Students, On September 15, 2018 our class will be taking a field trip to Purgatory Chasm. This is a Massachusetts state park located in Sutton, MA that offers challenging and scenic hiking trails, including one that we will be taking over large boulders scattered in a deep gorge. For more information, please see: http://www.mass.gov/locations/purgatory-chasm-state-reservation There are specific steps that you should each take to make this a safe and positive experience: * The hike will include slippery boulders that have been worn smooth by hikers. In addition, there are occasional gaps in the rocks you will need to traverse. For these reasons, please war supportive footware with soles providing good traction (hiking shoes or sneakers), not sandals, dress shoes with smooth soles, etc. * Purgatory Chasm can present a real risk of injury. Stay away from the edges of the chasm and do not try to climb the chasm walls or tall boulders. * During the hike, please wear sunscreen. * There may be mosquitos, ticks and other insects. Wear bug spray. * You will want to bring a backpack, water bottle, phone, etc. * If you have any questions or concerns, please consult with me before our trip. Schedule: * Load bus(es) at Hogan 3 (parking lot entrance) starting about 8:50am * Depart at 9:00am sharp * Return to campus by 12:00 noon * Note: Because of the nature of the terrain in the park, we will not attempt the trip on September 15 if it is raining. Substitute rain date is SUNDAY, September 16 on the same schedule. Watch for communications from Prof. Reents (Natural World Director) if it looks like we will need the rain date. Note: Because we will be getting back to campus in time for you to get lunch, we will NOT be providing the box lunches I mentioned before. There will be snacks provided, but not drinks (see point above about water bottles).
