Michaela Fleming -- Reflection Paper I'm glad to hear you enjoyed some of the things we saw on the field trip to MASSMoCa (the museum of contemporary art in North Adams). I agree that one of the most interesting things we saw were the five regular solid holograms of the tetrahedron, the cube, the octahedron, the dodecahedron, and the icosahedron. These figures are also called the ``Platonic solids" because they were heavily studied by the ancient Greeks and they even show up in Plato's philosophy. I think you could tie the holograms even more directly to "Flatland" by saying that an apparently three-dimensional image is being created by the markings on the plates which are only two-dimensional. Might the Flatlanders be able to understand three-dimensional objects by looking at the markings that produce them?? Part of the difference of this museum is that everything on show is really contemporary. So there almost has to be more of a connection between what the art is and things that you might find interesting because the people who are making the art have had many of the same experiences and ideas that you do. And part of that really comes out in what you said about the "Here Comes the Sun" and the "Tonal Walkway" exhibits. Much of the art that is being made today has a playful, thought-provoking side that comes across in the materials, the ideas the artist is trying to get across, the ways you get to interact with the art, etc. It's not as stodgy and it's not just about making "beautiful images" (whatever that means!) any more. I hope you have the inclination and the chance to explore other art in the future. A few technical comments: 1) "The museum connected with the montserrat theme of borders and boundaries"--capitalize Montserrat 2) "Many of the exhibits either physically or abstractly was a border." The subject "many of the exhibits" is plural, but the verb "was" is singular. Also this might be clearer something like: "Many of the exhibits involved borders either physically, or in some abstract sense." 3) Start a new paragraph when you switch gears from the discussion of the holograms to the discussion of the border between artist and viewers of the artwork.
