Mathematics 133 -- Intensive Calculus for Science 1
Quiz 3
September 20, 2005
The third regular quiz of the semester will be given in class on
Friday, September 23. It will cover the material from sections
1.5 and 1.6 from this week's problem set. No
calculators will be allowed on this quiz. The specific topics
to be covered will be:
- Trigonometric and sinusoidal functions
f(x) = A sin(Bx) + C and f(x) = A cos(Bx) + C.
Know:
- The meanings of A,B,C,
- How to sketch a graph of
one of these, and
- How to go ``backwards'' from a graph to a formula.
- Polynomial functions: f(x) = anxn + an-1xn-1
+ ... + a1x + a0. Know:
- How to find x-axis intercepts by factoring
- How the sign of an determines the overall
shape of the graph
- How to determine the smallest possible n and/or a possible
equation from a graph (like Section 1.6/5,7-10)
- Rational functions: f(x) = p(x)/q(x), where p(x), q(x)
are polynomials. Know:
- How to determine x-axis intercepts,
- Vertical asymptotes,
- Horizontal asymptotes from the equation, and
- How to match a graph with an equation (see 1.6/14, 29)
On the quiz, there will be three
questions similar to problems from the assignment.
