Mathematics 133 -- Intensive Calculus for Science 1

Quiz 1 -- Things to Know

September 7, 2005

The first quiz of the semester will be given in class on Friday, September 7. There will be two or three questions similar to problems from the first problem set. You should know the following material.

  1. Functions: verbal descriptions, tables, graphs, formulas. Be able answer questions like Exercises 1-3 from Section 1.1
  2. Linear functions: The slope-intercept form y = mx + b, the meanings of m and b. Know how to recognize when a function is linear from a table of values, and how to determine a formula for a linear function given two points on its graph.
  3. Exponential functions: Forms P(t) = P0at and P(t) = P0ekt. Know the shapes and concavities of the graphs, also which a (or k) correspond to exponential growth and which correspond to exponential decay. Also know how to determine a formula for an exponential function given two points on its graph.

Good Review Problems:

  1. Chapter 1, section 1: 1, 3, 4, 9, 15
  2. Chapter 1, section 2: 5 - 8, 17, 29
