Mathematics 134 -- Intensive Calculus 2
Quiz 6 -- Things to Know
March 14, 2001
Because of the class we missed the week before Spring
Break (and the postponement of Quiz 5, and the day of review
on the Quiz 5 topics on Monday), there will be some slight rearrangements
of the course syllabus.
- The material from Section 8.4 (applications to economics)
that we planned to cover will be omitted. We will devote this
week to the topics on densities, distributions, and probability
from the "Focus on Modeling" section at the end of Chapter 8
in the text.
- There will not be an individual problem set or a
"problem session" this week; we will
do a group discussion on Thursday instead.
- The sixth quiz of the semester will be given in class either
on Friday,
March 16 or the following Monday, March 19 (depending on whether we need
to continue work on the discussion on Friday). We'll decide
which day to do the quiz at the end of class on Thursday.
The quiz problems will be similar to the questions from
the discussion.
Topics to Know
- density function for a quantity x, and computing the
fraction of a total population that has a <= x <= b
- cumulative distribution function for a quantity x
- using the density function to compute the median
and mean values of x in the population
Good Review Problems:
- Problems on Distribution Functions (pages 413-415): 11, 13, 17
- Problems on Probability and Distributions (pages 421-423): 1, 3, 5
