Ordinary Differential Equations, MATH 304-01

Homework Assignment #2

Due Wednesday, September 15, START of Class

Homework should be turned in at the BEGINNING OF CLASS. All problem numbers refer to the Hirsch, Smale and Devaney text. Unless otherwise noted, each part (a), (b), (c), etc. of a problem should be answered. You should write up solutions neatly to all problems, making sure to SHOW ALL YOUR WORK. A nonempty subset will be graded. You are strongly encouraged to work on these problems with other classmates, although the solutions you turn in should be YOUR OWN WORK.
Important: Please list the names of any students or faculty who you worked with on the assignment.

Chapter 1 Exercises (pp. 16 - 19)
Problems:   1, 2b, 2c, 2e, 4, 7, 11, 12a, 14

Hints and notes: For #4, change the label on the vertical axis to -b and assume that b is a fixed positive constant. Also, label the vertical intercept of the graph as c, where c is a fixed positive constant. This will help you label your bifurcation diagram. For #12a, try actually finding infinitely many solutions (piecewise functions are ok).
