Exercises

  1. One way to investigate your own learning style is to think about the mathematical ideas and concepts you have learned in the past.
    1. Describe what comes to your mind when you think about the derivative of a function.
    2. Describe what comes to your mind when you think about integration.
    3. Do your answers to (a) and (b) suggest something about your own learning style in mathematics?
  2. Think about the mathematics you have learned in the last year. How did you learn these ideas? Which of these do you believe you know well enough to explain to others? Is there a difference between the concepts you know and remember now and the concepts you knew for a short time last year? Give as many specific examples as possible.
  3. What do you think your mathematical strengths are? What other strengths could you contribute to a group? For example, do you take notes well? Are you quiet or talkative? Do you ask questions when you don't understand? What strengths do you hope other members of your group would contribute to the discussion?

  4. Have you used calculators or computers in math? If so, which have you used and how much have you used them? Do you rely on them? If so, what for? How does using a calculator/computer effect your learning of mathematics?
  5. What is your background in math and science? What is your schedule this semester?
