Bone: What do we learn?

  September 1, 1999

Complete Bone by Friday.

Working in assigned groups, reread the pair of chapters assigned below and answer the following question:

In each chapter, what do we learn about ``the story'' and what do we learn about individual characters?

You should type up your answer and submit one copy for your group at my office by 10 AM Friday, one hour before class. I will photocopy your answers and distribute them to the whole class for discussion Friday. On Friday we will begin class by having each group put abbreviated versions of their list on the blackboard.

To complete this assignment you should meet with your partner(s) and together carefully work through the chapters assigned to you. Think about the events and descriptions and the conclusions you might draw from the chapters. Your answer should be no more than one page and can take the form of a list. Where appropriate, support your items by a reference, either a short quote or page and line number(s). The items should not be simple plot statements. For example, ``Leila and Mason visit Nina in New York'' does not answer the question, but what we learn from the narration while they are in New York would answer the question. Keep in mind that we might reasonably disagree on answers to the question, so it is important to find support for your interpretation in the text.
