September 2001:

  • Colson Whitehead Thursday, September 6, 4-5:30 PM, Brooks Concert Hall. The author of The Intuitionist will read from and answer questions about the first FYP common reading of the year.

  • Dead Man Walking Tuesday, September 18, 7:00 PM, Location TBA. Film based on Sister Helen PreJean's Dead Man Walking.

  • Michael Wingfield Sunday, September 23, 5-7 PM. Belmont Street AME Zion Church, 21 Belmont Street, Worcester. "The Roots of African-American Religion: Drum and Song of the African New World," a hands-on, audience-participation demonstration and discussion of African/American drumming and its significance in American culture.

  • Sister Helen PrejeanTuesday, September 25, 7:30 PM, Hogan Ballroom. Advocate for the abolition of the death penalty and author of Dead Man Walking will speak to the College community.

October 2001:

  • Dead Poets Society Thursday, October 11, 7 PM. Location TBA. The Peter Weir film, starring Robin Williams, about a year at the fictional Welton Academy in the 1950's.

  • Song of Myself Tuesday, October 16, 7 PM. Hanselman Piano Lounge. FYP discussion of the second common reading, Walt Whitman's Song of Myself.

  • Silence Thursday, October 25, 8 PM, O'Kane Theatre. A new play by Brian Dykstra, directed by Magaret Perry, Holy Cross Class of 1986.

  • Baroque Improvisation Tuesday, October 30, 7:30 PM. Brooks Concert Hall. Carol Lieberman, Baroque and Classical violin, and Mark Kroll, harpsichord and forte piano. Pre-performance lecture at 7:30 PM and performance at 8:00 PM.

November 2001:

  • Salim Washington, Thursday, November 15, 7:00 PM, 519 Hogan Campus Center. Salim Washington, Jazz Musician and Assistant Professor of Jazz History & Performance at Brooklyn College, will lecture on "Creating a Spiritual Vocabulary for Jazz: John Coltrane's Classic Quartet" and then demonstrate the lecture with his quartet. Salim Washington is a highly regarded jazz saxophonist, band leader, and scholar. He founded and still occasionally plays with the noted jazz collective the Roxbury Blues Aesthetic.

  • The Restless Conscience: Resistance to Hilter within Germany, 1933-1945 , Documentary Film. November 19, Monday, 7 PM. Stein 120.

  • Life on the Screen November 29, Thursday, 7 PM. Hanselman Piano Lounge. FYP discussion of the third common reading for the semester, Sherry Turkle's Life on the Screen.

January 2002:

  • The Moral Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: A Student-led Teach-in and Debate, Monday, January 21, 7:30-9:00 PM. Rehm Library, Smith Hall.

  • Prof. Robert Garvey, Rodino lecture, Tuesday, January 22, 4:00 PM. This annual lecture is devoted to his memory of Richard Rodino, formerly of the Department of English, played a central role in launching the First- Year Program, now in its tenth year. Prof. Garvey was U.S. Professor of the Year for 2000 by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education.

February 2002:

  • Don Byron, Jazz Improvisation, Friday, February 1, 4:00 PM, lecture and demonstration in Brooks Concert Hall. 8:00 PM, performance in Brooks Concert Hall. Don Byron is the premier jazz clarinetist of his generation. His CD's include Tuskegee Experiments, Romance with the Unseen, No-Vibe Zone: Live at Knitting Factory, and Plays the Music of Mickey Katz. Check out the article from the Wall Street Journal.
