    Assignment 3

Due: Friday, January 30, in class

Writing/Discussion topic: The Internet and Social Life

Last week we began thinking about how communication over the internet can change how people interact with one another, either for better or for worse. We discussed an article about the website JuicyCampus.com. This week we will continue this investigation by examining how email and web communication can be detrimental or benificial to social relationships, depending on the context.

    Read the following articles:

Bargh, J.A. and McKenna, Y.A. (2004). The Internet and Social Life, Annual Review of Psychology, 55: 573 - 590.

Hinduja, S. and Patchin, J. (2005). Cyberbullying Fact Sheet, from http://www.cyberbullying.us, downloaded January 23, 2009.

Answer the following questions. Write at least 1/2 page, typed and double spaced, for each question.

    a) Give a reasoned argument why communication over the internet is overall beneficial for social relationships.

    b) Give a reasoned argument why communication over the internet is overall detrimental to social relationships. (Note: You will likely agree more with one of the above two arguments, but I want you to try to understand both points of view).
