Assignment 16Due: Friday, April 3, in class
Writing/Discussion topic: Anonymity on the internet Anonymity on the internet can be a positive thing, allowing people to find information or make purchases without being identified or known. However, as we have seen with cyberbullying and websites like Juicy Campus, anonymity can have its negative aspects as well. Read the following article: Nissenbaum, Helen (2004) The Meaning of anonymity in an information age, in Spinello, R.A. and Tavani, H.T. (eds), "Readings in CyberEthics, 2nd edition," Boston: Jones and Bartlett Publishers.
Answer the following questions. Write at least 1/2 page, typed and double spaced, for each question. Support your arguments with references to the reading. (You may also use sources other than the reading, as long as you cite them properly). a) Give a reasoned argument that anonymity on the internet is important to people's right to privacy. Therefore, laws and technology should be developed to protect anonymity on the internet. b) Give a reasoned argument that anonymity on the internet has enough negative aspects that it should not be protected by law or with technological tools.
