Selected GNU/Linux Web Sites
It is far more difficult to decide where to get information about
GNU/Linux on the web than it is merely to find information. This is an
extremely brief list of URLs that were active in May, 2000, and which
should remain active for the foreseeable future. I am not personally
affiliated with any sites listed here, but have merely found each of
them useful, and believe them all to be of the highest quality.
Categories (overlapping and subjective):
[D] = software downloads (mostly not for beginners), [G] = general
interest, [I] = information/orientation, [P] = web portal
- [G] http://www.google.org (Search engine; to find any
program mentioned in this document, go to google and search for it by
name.)
- [G] http://www.opensource.org (The Open Source Project)
- [I] http://metalab.unc.edu/mdw/LDP/gs/gs.html (Getting
started)
- [I] http://www.linuxgazette.com (An online GNU/Linux journal)
- [I] http://www.linux.com (Tips, news, articles, etc.)
- [P] https://linuxcentral.com (An enormous collection of
links and information)
- [P] http://www.linuxlinks.com/Software (``The Linux portal'')
- [I] http://www.linuxdoc.org/links/index.html (The Linux
Documentation Project)
- [D] http://SAL.KachinaTech.COM/index.shtml (Scientific
Applications for Linux)
- [D] http://www.toms.net/rb/ (Rescue disks: A kernel and
root filesystem on one floppy)
- [D] http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux ( The Linux
ftp site)
- [D] http://rufus.w3.org (Red Hat packages and
Libraries. All of them.)
