Textbook: Calculus: concepts and contexts, 4th edition, by James Stewart. This is the same text we used for Math 131. It is available at the Holy Cross bookstore in a special soft-cover edition (for a significant discount versus the hard-cover edition). If you buy the book at the bookstore, be sure to get the stand-alone version of the book -- not the version bundled with WebAssign (which we will not use in this course). The ISBN for the stand-alone book is 1111006113.

Academic Integrity is something I take very seriously. I expect you to read and understand the Department policy on Academic Integrity. In particular, copying on exams and quizzes will not be tolerated. (However, you are welcome to collaborate on homework assignments; see the homework section in the syllabus.)

Calculus Workshop: a drop-in tutoring session that takes place Sunday through Thursday, 7:00-9:00 pm, in Swords 302. Begins the second week of class. This is a great way to get help on any homework problem you may be stuck on. It's also a good way to meet folks from class who are working on the same assignment.

Gradic Rubric for Homework and Exams

Exam information: Solutions to the first midterm are available here.

The first midterm is next Thursday, February 25 in class. It will cover Sections 5.1-5.10, excluding section 5.9. (In other words, all the material that has appeared on the homework thus far). There will be 5 problems, and they will be similar to those that have appeared on the homework and quizzes, though some of them will be harder than the quiz problems.

The best way to review for the exam is to work problems, and to make sure you have understood all the homework and quiz problems. There is no homework due next week so as to give you ample time to work the review problems -- you should think of the review problems as homework.

We will spend class reviewing on Wednesday, February 24. I will also stay after class that day until 5 pm for a problem session to help you on the review problems (this will be similar to the review sessions last semester). Also, my office hours on Thursday from 10-11:30 are a good time to come get help with review problems.
Here are the review problems:

Section 5.3, #51
Section 5.4, #2, 19
Chapter 5 Review (pp. 425-427), #1, 3, 7, 9, 11, 12, 13, 15, 18, 19, 21, 22, 27, 28, 29, 31, 33, 34, 39, 43, 55, 57, 59, 65, 68ab.

Practice Exam: if you want to simulate the exam, set aside 50 minutes and work these problems: Review problems from Chapter 5, #20, 30, 34, 60; Section 5.3 #64; Section 5.2 #38. Answers will be posted next week.

Solutions to practice exam problems:
Review problems from Chapter 5:
#20: (-1/3) ln 4.
#30: (1/2) arcsin(x^2) + C (Note: arcsin is also commonly written as sin with a -1 superscript).
#34: arctan(e) - (pi/4) (Note: arctan is also written as tan with a -1 superscript).
#60: 40/3.
Section 5.3, #64: 1800 liters.
Section 5.2, #38: 25.
