Multivariable Calculus

Homework Assignment #4

Due Thursday, September 27, START of Class

Homework should be turned in at the BEGINNING OF CLASS. All problem numbers refer to McCallum's book, the required text for the course. You should write up solutions neatly to all problems, making sure to SHOW ALL YOUR WORK. A nonempty subset will be graded. You are strongly encouraged to work on these problems with other classmates, although the solutions you turn in should be your own work.

Section 12.2
Problems:   5, 8, 9, 10, 13

Section 12.3
Problems:   3, 6, 7, 10, 15, 18, 19, 24

Hint: Problems #19 and #24 require projecting one vector onto another.

Section 12.4
Problems:   1, 2, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 20

Hint: For problem #14, how does the direction of the line of intersection relate to the normal vectors of each plane?

Chapter Review (pp. 93-95)
Problems:   4, 24, 32

Hint: For problem #32, you must find the distance along a line perpendicular to the plane and through the point P. This requires vector projection.
