Homework Assignment #4

Due Thursday, October 4, START of Class

Homework should be turned in at the BEGINNING OF CLASS. All problem numbers refer to Single Variable Calculus, Concepts and Contexts 3rd ed., by Stewart, the required text for the course. You should write up solutions neatly to all problems, making sure to SHOW ALL YOUR WORK. A nonempty subset will be graded. You are strongly encouraged to work on these problems with other classmates, although the solutions you turn in should be YOUR OWN WORK. Please staple your assignment.
Important: At the top of your homework, please list the names of any students or faculty who you worked with on the assignment.

Section 2.3, pp. 115 - 116
Problems:   1, 2, 11, 12, 15, 16, 22, 27, 28
Hint: On problem #16, try multiplying the top and bottom of the fraction by the conjugate of the numerator. The conjugate of a - b is a + b (and vice-versa). For #22, how do you add fractions?

Section 2.4, pp. 126 - 127
Problems:   3a, 4, 7, 9, 14, 15, 33, 38, 39
Hint: On problem #33, use the definition of continuity at x = 2 to determine the correct choice of the constant c.

Section 2.5, pp. 137 - 139
Problems:   3, 4, 6, 7, 10, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23
