CSCI 363 Computational Vision--Spring 2010

    Journal Club

The journal club in this course is designed to read and discuss classic literature in Vision Science and to give students an opportunity to read and think about how scientific knowledge is accumulated and advanced. Approximately once a week you will be assigned to read one or more scientific articles or book chapters that we will discuss in class. Everyone is expected to read the article(s) assigned.
One student will be assigned to summarize the paper or papers and lead the discussion. Each student will present once during the semester.
All students will write out a brief summary of the paper (1 page or less) to be turned in on the day of the journal club.

Presentation: The student presenting the paper should plan for a 10 to 15 minute presentation that will be followed by a class discussion.

Written Summary: The written summary (by all students) should be 1 page or less summarizing the main points of the paper.

The presentation and written summaries should consist of a summary and critique of the paper:

    1. Summary of the paper: Not all papers will fit into a single format, however the following are some guidelines for summarizing the paper:
      • Summarize the question the paper is addressing.
      • Summarize any background presented in the paper that may help understanding.
      • Summarize what experiments were performed (if any) and the results.
      • Summarize any computational theories that are presented in the paper.
      • Summarize the conclusions drawn by the authors.

    2. Critique of the paper: You should offer your own critique of the paper. You may agree with the conclusions of the paper or disagree. You should state what you thought was good or bad about the experiments, results or conclusions and why. You also might state what you think the relevance of the paper is beyond what is stated by the authors. Did the results surprise you? Did they change the way you thought about a particular aspect of vision? Or was this a paper that led to obvious conclusions? You are allowed to criticize these papers! (Although you should be ready to back up your critique with reasoned arguments).

Leading the discussion: If you are the presenter, after your presentation, you will get to lead the class discussion. On some papers this will be easy, since the class will have lots of things they want to say. However you should have several questions ready to ask the group in order to stimulate discussion.

Meeting to rehearse presentation: Each presenter must meet with me on Monday or Wednesday before the journal club to practice their presentation. You must arrange a meeting time with me on the Thursday the week before your presentation.
