The journal club in this course is designed to read and discuss classic literature in
Vision Science and to give students an opportunity to read and think about how scientific knowledge
is accumulated and advanced. Approximately once a week you will be assigned to read one or
more scientific articles or book chapters that we will discuss in class. Everyone is expected
to read the article(s) assigned.
One student will
be assigned to summarize the paper or papers and lead the discussion. Each student will
present once during the semester.
All students will write out a brief summary of the paper
(1 page or less) to be turned in on the day of the journal club.
Presentation: The student presenting the paper should plan for a 10 to 15 minute presentation that will be followed by a class discussion.
Written Summary: The written summary (by all students) should be 1 page or less summarizing the main points of the paper.
The presentation and written summaries should consist of a summary and critique of the paper:
Leading the discussion: If you are the presenter, after your presentation, you will get to lead the class discussion. On some papers this will be easy, since the class will have lots of things they want to say. However you should have several questions ready to ask the group in order to stimulate discussion.
Meeting to rehearse presentation: Each presenter must meet with me on Monday or Wednesday before the journal club to practice their presentation. You must arrange a meeting time with me on the Thursday the week before your presentation.
