Written Assignments

My goal for you is that you will learn calculus and take this knowledge with you when the course is over. The problem sets are your chance to practice the material and get feedback in a low-risk setting, similarly to athletic practice. Please don't do the homework just for the sake of getting it done. Instead, treat it as a low-stakes weekly assessment of how well you're picking up concepts and problem-solving techniques.

Each week I'll assign ten even-numbered questions from the textbook. These should be written up neatly and stapled before you come to class. Clearly label the problems, and leave enough room on the paper for the grader to write comments. Your best ten assignment scores count for 10% of your course grade.
Each week I'll also suggest a larger group of odd-numbered book questions for practice. These cover more routine skills and concepts. They do not need to be turned in, but I highly recommend that you do them for your own benefit.

Expectations for Written Work

General Guidelines: Briefly, treat each written assignment like a job application.
- Problem sets are due at the beginning of class. No late assignments will be accepted for any reason. If an unforeseen emergency prevents you from completing an assignment, please notify me immediately.
- Work problems in order, clearly indicate which problem is which, and leave space for the grader to write comments. Please do not write on both sides of the page unless your paper is thick enough that a felt-tip pen will not bleed through.
- Staple your assignment before you come to class on Fridays. Do not use paper clips; “dog-earing” is not acceptable. There will be an automatic 10% deduction for each unstapled assignment.
- You must show all work or give written explanations, as appropriate, for full credit. Your papers should be neatly written, and be understandable on their own.
Academic Integrity: You are welcome to discuss the problem sets with classmates. However:
- The written work you submit for grading must be written up in your own words.
- You must acknowledge by name any classmates you worked with by writing “I worked with…” at the top of your assignment.
