14th Leonard C. Sulski Memorial Lecture

The fourteenth annual Leonard C. Sulski Memorial Lecture in Mathematics will be given by Professor Richard P. Stanley of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 8:00pm on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 in Room 519 of the Hogan Campus Center of the College of the Holy Cross. The title of the lecture is "Plane Tilings." The lecture series is a tribute to Professor Sulski, who taught in the Mathematics Department at Holy Cross from 1965 until his untimely death from leukemia in 1991.

Professor Stanley received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Harvard University in 1971. He has been a member of the Department of Mathematics at M.I.T. since 1973, and he is currently the Norman Levinson Professor of Applied Mathematics there. His research area is combinatorics.

Professor Stanley was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1988 and to the National Academy of Sciences in 1995. He has given numerous distinguished lectures over the course of his career and was recently a Plenary Speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Madrid in 2006. He was also awarded the Leroy P. Steele Prize for Mathematical Exposition by the American Mathematical Society in 2001. His talk will be aimed at a general mathematical audience.
